Doves
Late last year I happened to be watching the end of Jay Leno and patiently waiting for my favorite late night host Conan O'Brien to come on. Leno announced his music guest, Doves (not The Doves) who I had never heard of before but quickly found myself tapping my foot to the upbeat song. The song was "Black and White Town" and it was from the group's latest album Some Cities. I immediately bought Lost Souls after reading some positive customer reviews and I recently purchased The Last Broadcast.
The pop trio Doves is from Manchester, England and is led by Jimi Goodwin (vocals/bass) and twin brothers Jez (guitar) and Andy Williams (drums). Their sound is comparable to the likes of Radiohead, Coldplay, and Oasis. The songs are lyrically and musically rich with an inherent mood that differs from song to song. The group made its debut in October of 1998 with the Cedar Ep and immediately earned "next big thing" status in the British press. After releasing two more albums in the UK, the band released its first full-length effort, Lost Souls, in the US in late 2000. Two sold-out American tours and five recording studios later, Doves emerged with their second album, The Last Broadcast, in spring 2002. The album quickly debuted at number one on the U.K. charts. Their latest album, Some Cities, followed in March 2005.
Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast are both great albums with each one being unique in its sound. I plan to purchase Some Cities in the near future and will keep you posted on what I think of the album. Some of my favorite songs include "Pounding," "There Goes the Fear" and "Black and White Town."

I got a chance to listen to some of Doves' music. I like some of the stuff they are doing. Overall I kinda feel like they are a typical band that you get coming out of England. I definetly think there music is good though cause it seems like they can mix up their tempos nicely. If you like these guys I would check out a band called Gomez. They are kinda like these guys but a little more on the experimental style, and not so much like Coldplay. Speaking of Coldplay, I think the Doves sorta sound like Coldplay's older stufff, which I think is real good. I am not a big fan of Coldplay's new album, X&Y, especially when you compare it to their first albums. What about you, do you like the new Coldplay?

It’s great to read that there’s another Doves fan out there! Doves are a really amazing band. I’ve pretty much always loved anything that’s come out of Manchester, but they certainly are worthy of following in the line of great bands to hail from that city. I’m really grateful that people like Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien have a large number of U.K. acts on because that’s how I generally hear about new bands from across the pond. Unfortunately, I’m not able to attend the upcoming Across the Narrows festival, where Doves will be joined by Oasis, Jet, Kasabian, and The Redwalls (among others), so I sadly haven’t seen them live. I’m sure it will be a great opportunity to get more exposure in America.

I really like this blog because it keeps me up-to-date on new bands. I normally don't go looking for new bands; I wait for others to discover them first. I think it's great you guys are so interested in finding new music.
I downloaded the acoustic version of There Goes the Fear by Doves and I really liked it. It was very mellow and I agree that it does remind me of Coldplay. However, I will have to say that the one thing I didn't like was the change in tempo. It really felt like an interruption. But overall, great band. Keep them coming.
