The Arcade Fire

Hey everyone, I'm back to tell you about another great band The Arcade Fire. My roommate gave me their first full length cd, Funeral for my birthday last year and it's now one of my favorite albums.

The Arcade Fire is an indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Its members are Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, William Butler, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld, and Jeremy Gara. As of May 2005, the touring band includes violinist Owen Pallett, who has opened for their shows, appearing as the one-man band ‘Final Fantasy’

The Arcade Fire formed around the husband and wife duo of Butler and Chassagne. Joining together as recently as mid-2003, the current lineup solidified in late 2003/early 2004, when their first full-length album Funeral was recorded. The Arcade Fire is known for its enthralling live performances, as well as its use of a large number of musical instruments. The promise showed by the band in its live shows allowed it to land a record contract with Chapel Hill-based independent record label Merge Records.

The band employs a vast array of instruments—mainly guitar, drums, and bass guitar—but also piano, violin, viola, cello, xylophone, keyboard, accordion, and harp. With several able musicians, the Arcade Fire takes most of its instrumental diversity on tour, with band members switching instrumental duties between songs.

Their first full-length album, Funeral, debuted in September 2004 in the USA and in February 2005 in the UK, and was very highly acclaimed by critics. The title of the debut album was chosen because of the deaths of several relatives of band members during recording. These events created a somber atmosphere which influenced songs such as “Une année sans lumière” (”A Year without Light”), “In the Backseat”, and “Haiti”, Chassagne’s elegy to her lost homeland.

My roommate recently went to a music festival in Texas and she had the chance to these guys live. She said it was one of the best live performances she has ever seen. Coldplay, who also played at the festival, could not stop talking about how good The Arcade Fire is. Chris Martin even went as far as saying he was going to have to find a new job becase Arcade puts his band to shame. My favorite songs from Funeral include "
Neighborhood #3(lights out)" and "Wake Up."

I really like how you are talking about so many cool bands on you blog. The Arcade Fire are absolutely amazing and definetly deserve lots of success. I agree with Chris Martin when he says The Arcade Fire puts Colplay to shame, especially after their latest not-so-great album X&Y.

Thanks for giving good background on the band. I knew that they were from Canada but I didn't know all of those details. One of my friends saw them this summer at Lollapalooza in Chicago and said they were absolutely amazing live. I would love to see them at some point. I can't wait for another album because I know its going to blow me away. Nice Blog. Hope the next one is just as good.

I am a big fan of The Arcade Fire. I think they are definitely one of the most creative bands around, and they’re one of the few Canadian bands I know of besides Hot Hot Heat. The thing I like best about them is what you already mentioned, which is the fact that they utilize a variety of instruments. Unlike a lot of the other bands around today, they have a more fleshed-out sound and can create more diversity in their music. I haven’t seen them live yet, but I hope to catch them sometime soon. I’m not a huge Coldplay fan, so I’d agree with Chris Martin’s assessment!

Amy, where do you get these awesome bands from? I loved Neighborhood #1 and Wake Up. Please make me a copy of their album. I think it is really cool that the band is focused around a husband and wife couple. There aren’t many bands like that. Also, it’s awesome that they use different instruments in their music like the violin and cello. Will they be on tour near us anytime soon? I think their music is kind of soothing and would be perfect for road trips.

Hey. I d/led their CD. It's not really my type of music. But I am the type of person that appreciates a lot of music and will deifnitely agree that they are a very talented band. The songs are very well put together. I thought the recording for the vocals sounded like he was singing in a bathroom, too much reverb. Still a really good sound though, I just usually like a little bit faster music, and a little more rock n roll.
