Death Cab for Cutie Concert

This past Tuesday night, I went to the Electric Factory to see one of my favorite bands Death Cab for Cutie. My friends and I arrived a little early and we had to stand in the freezing rain for what seemed like an eternity, but once we got inside I could tell it was going to be an awesome night. It was only the second time that I've been to the Electric Factory, but I have to say that it's a really cool place and I will definitely go back in the future. The upstairs balcony is the best part about the place. You have to be 21 in order to go up so my friends and I quickly ascended, grabbed some seats and ordered a beer.
The opening band, Stars, came on around 8 pm and played an awesome set. I actually started listening to Stars last spring and their latest album Set Yourself On Fire, is one of my favorites. The band was fromed by Torquil Campbell and Chris Seligman in New York. Along with friends Evan Cranley and Amy Milan, the group relocated to Montreal. Their debut full-length album, Nightsongs, was released in 2001, followed by the EP, The Comeback. Their sophmore effort, Heart was released in 2004, followed by Set Yourself On Fire.
The group mostly played songs from their latest album, including my favorite "Ageless Beauty." Amy Milan's voice is absolutely amazing. She sounded exactly like the album maybe even a little bit better. A lot of their songs have orchestra accompaniment so it was really cool that they had a violinist on stage and the other leader singer, Torquil plays the trumpet on some songs.
Finally, Death Cab came on the stage and started off with one of my favorites, "This Is The New Year." The group has about eight albums and I only have three so far since I became a fan late in the game. But luckily I knew almost all of the songs they played except for maybe three. They played for a solid two hours and of course they came out for a three song encore. Overall, the show was pretty awesome but I was a little disappointed with the crowd. I feel as though there was a lack of energy and I spotted only a few kids really rocking out and feeling the music. Oh well, I definitely plan on seeing these guys again when they're back in town.

So I definetly wanted to echo what you said in your blog, I had such an awesome time at the Death Cab concert on Tuesday. I am really jealous that you got the good bar seats upstairs. I definetly wish I had those for a concert this Death Cab, it would have been nice to sit back and just soke up the music.
I wasn't that impressed with Stars. I have a friend who is a big fan so I gave them a chance but they didn't do a whole lot for me.
I definetly loved the set that Death Cab put on. I was really surprised that they played alot of the their older stuff which made me really happy. I think that they come across better live then they do on CD especially with their older stuff. What do you think?
Keep up the awesome blog postings.
I love live music, and though I’ve only been to the Electric Factory once (March 2004 for The Vines/Jet/The Living End), I thought it was a cool place. The only thing that’s a bit scary is getting frisked on the way in! I’ll check out the upstairs next time I’m there.
I’ve only ever heard good things about Death Cab For Cutie. I think they’re a really creative band and I hope to see them live someday. I didn’t realize they have eight albums! I’m a late fan as well and am only familiar with their more recent releases. I know what you mean about the crowd affecting the atmosphere; I suppose the crowd’s enthusiasm depends on a number of factors. It’s nicer when the crowd is energetic, but it’s great that the band wasn’t affected.
“The Same Thing” song by Death Cab for a Cutie played right when I opened up to their website. I liked it; it was mellow and soothing. There pictures stink though. I love black and white pictures, but there isn’t a clear shot of the singer Amy Milan. I liked the Journal section on their website also. Where is the Electric Factory? Philly, I’m guessing? It was sad to hear that the crowd wasn’t very enthusiastic, possibly because it was a Tuesday night? I am jealous that you get to go to concerts. I barely have time to listen to the radio or watch MTV! I’m looking forward to your next band!
I think a band like Death Cab isn't going to really have people rocking out at it. They are pretty mellow and are definitely a band I would sit around and relax to. I went to Electric Factory for a Fall Out Boy concert a while back. I sat up top also. I felt there was more energy down below, but I enjoyed not being tossed around by 500 people. Either way, the concert sounded like it was still pretty cool. I've been d/ling a lot more of their songs and am starting to like that more and more.
I actually really enjoyed Stars. I think they definitely have a good beat and original lyrics. I was really jammin' out when I downloaded their song "Ageless Beauty". This is definitely one of your best picks. I don't really get a chance to go to many concerts. I think the last one I went to was in downtown Baltimore where Jared Leto's band, 30 Seconds to Mars played. And even then, I don't remember much and I am pretty sure I only went to see Jared Leto. Shallow right? Whatever, anyway, I can't wait to hear about your next band pick!
